Spurgeon Banyard

About Spurgeon Banyard

An educator with more than two decades of experience, including roles as both teacher and principal, Spurgeon Banyard holds a BA in political science and a master’s degree in secondary education, both from Mississippi’s Alcorn State University. He went on to obtain his PhD in education administration and supervision from Mississippi State University. To prepare further for administrative responsibilities, Spurgeon Banyard attended the Principal Institute training at Millsap College in Jackson, Mississippi, and the McPherson and Jacobson’s Superintendent Academy in Omaha, Nebraska.

Dr. Banyard currently serves as a principal in Mississippi’s Jackson Public Schools, where he has implemented measures to improve academic performance on state assessments and prioritized the creation of a nurturing educational environment. Formerly a principal with Lafayette Parish Schools in Louisiana, he was named Administrator of the Year in the Birmingham (Alabama) City Schools in 2009.

Aside from his work in education, Dr. Banyard was in Mississippi law enforcement, serving as a police officer at the state capitol in Jackson and as a sheriff’s deputy in Hinds County. In his free time, he stays fit through a combination of cardiovascular activities and weightlifting. He also enjoys spending time with his family.
